Common Skiing Injuries and Causes
Injured Area |
Causation |
Cervical Spine |
Most often related with attempting jumps and landing poorly or due to losing control and hitting other skiers or objects. |
Thumb ("Skier's thumb") |
Due to increased extension forces applied to the MCP (metacarpophalangeal) joint. This is usually caused by the ski pole or a fall. |
Lumbar Spine |
Counter-rotation of the hips and shoulder girdle through he movements (cross-country mostly). This will affect mostly those with a lack of flexibility and decreased strength of the trunk muscles. |
Knees |
Ligament and/or meniscal injuries often occur with falls at slow and high speeds. |
Toes ("Skier's toe") |
Repetitive, abrupt contact of the footwear on the edge of the toenail can cause a small hemorrhage under the nail. This can be prevented by making sure that the ski boots fit properly and by keeping the toenails properly trimmed. |
